Bryan Garner, PhD
In memoriam, 1976–2025
The Ohio State University, Co-Director
Bryan R. Garner, Ph.D., was a professor and director of dissemination and implementation science in the Division of General Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University and director of dissemination and implementation research at the Center for the Advancement of Team Science, Analytics, and Systems Thinking (CATALYST).
He served as the co-director of the NIH-funded HEAL HD2A Research Adoption Support Center Substance Use Disorder Implementation Support Core and as faculty at the Center for Dissemination and Implementation at Stanford.
Dr. Garner’s research advanced the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of using facilitation and incentivization as strategies to improve the implementation of evidence-based interventions for substance use disorders. He also developed several pragmatic tools widely used in implementation science, including the Setting-Intervention Fit (SIF) Index, the Exploration, Preparation, and Implementation Effectiveness (EPIE) Index, and the Strategies Timeline and Activities Reporting (STAR) Tables.
His work enriched the field by challenging traditional boundaries between research and practice and accelerating the translation of evidence into real-world impact. Known for building inclusive teams, cultivating enduring collaborations, and mentoring the next generation of implementation scientists, Dr. Garner embodied the very principles of sustainability and engagement that defined his research.
His legacy continues through the colleagues and communities he inspired.
